Event: 'River Dee From Carrog To Horseshoe Falls' Print
  River Trip
Date: Sunday, January 30, 2011
Duration: All Day
Contact Info:

There will be a trip on the River Dee from Carrog to Horseshoe Falls (by Chain Bridge Hotel, Llangollen). There is a link so you can see where Carrog is, below (thanks to Ian Morris for telling me that I can use a link)

Bing Map Directions

There are some white water sections on this stretch so all equipment will be required including a helmet. No helmet, no get on. Don’t forget it will be cold so bring thermals (for me).

It is also essential that you have a warm drink and something to eat as this can be quite a long trip, (to be carried in the boat)

All are welcome, even Polo players (spit). The only thing I ask is that you can paddle 100 yards in a straight line.

Meeting at Carrog at 0930 with a view of being on the water at 1000 so please don’t be late.

If you are interested, then let me know soonest so that we can sort out car sharing, I have room for one as I already know of one person going. Please tell me that your going and not rely on somebody else remembering to do it for you. Do not show up unexpected!

Any question, ask me

Regards,

Vincent

UPDATE: here is a bit more information about the stretch we are going to do, taken from the Canoe Wales site.

“Carrog Bridge GR115437. The latter is a more usual starting point, especially during the Open Days. To reach this, turn off the A5 in the small village of Llidiart y Parc.

This is a lovely touring section of river through a rich and shaded valley. When the leaves are turning myriad shades of golden brown, then this must be one of the most idyllic places to float along. In high water, the river booms along, washing out many of the shingle-type rapids which are found on this stretch. Some way down here is a small diagonal weir step, which is ideal for playing in, and is best at low to medium flows. Further down, at high spate in particular, the rapids approaching Berwen are bouncy at the grade.

At the bottom of the trip, around a lazy sweeping right hand bend, are the Horseshoe Falls. The water is suddenly slowed from its natural flow, warning as to what is causing the rumble that can increasingly be heard. Egress well above this weir, on the left GR196433.”

Please Note: – Although Llidiart y Parc is the starting point it may not be our meeting point. I have a few names already down but I need to make sure that if other people come, there is going to be enough parking space for all. If you haven’t told me yourself (or guardian) then I don’t know you’re coming. Last thing to point out, I reckon the trip is about 8 miles.

The list currently is:-

Any questions, please ask me! I will let you know the meeting point shortly before the day once I get a clearer picture of who is coming.
